#035 – Happiness within; finding meaning in the mundane

I am Stella Park (스텔라박) and I’m from Seoul, South Korea. I’ve loved to illustrate with coloured pencils since I was very young. I especially love to draw and depict my daily life and the cities and places I have travelled and visited. Drawing and sharing my life like this via the medium of illustration, brings me happiness and warms my heart.

There are many different materials for creating my illustrations. There are lots of different choices at my disposal. However, the reason why I prefer coloured pencils among them all, is because I can take my time to draw, and also reflect and enjoy the process.

I can take my time to draw, and also reflect and enjoy the process.

I enjoy taking the process of creation slow, so I can look back on my life and my surroundings and where I have been. I’ve found that if you draw slowly with coloured pencils, you can see or feel something that you didn’t see in that particular moment. This is why I like to draw with coloured pencils.

I majored in Media Design in college. There, I learned various design fields such as UX/UI, video design, animation, 3D, content design and typography. I met countless people and communicated and worked with many, including great professors and students alike. All these experiences have become a very important asset to me and were amazing and meaningful moments. So, I’m fond of design in general.

Based on my studies, a lot of people around me thought I should find a design related job within the area of UX/UI or content design. This was mostly because I achieved good grades and studied hard. However truthfully, even when I was planning or creating designs, I was not as happy as when I found myself creating something with coloured pencils. This doesn’t mean I hated design or wasn’t enjoying it, but there was a clear difference in how I felt. Both bring me happiness, but I discovered that I felt most valued, purposeful and content when illustrating my ordinary life. It was learning this and understanding how I felt within, that awakened my ‘real dream’ to be an illustrator from those moments onwards.

I felt most valued, purposeful and content when illustrating my ordinary life.

I am confident in my ability to draw something close to my heart, and I feel a lot of fulfilment through this work. Sometimes there are people who are curious about why I practise hand-drawing when there are more convenient digital alternatives. These same people can forget that to them, what may seem ordinary or boring in my life, comes alive when I draw those moments. It’s personal to me.

…what may seem ordinary or boring in my life, comes alive when I draw those moments.

Sharing this doesn’t mean that I’m particularly talented or really good at drawing. It means that I can give beauty to even the most mundane of moments, and there’s art in that.

To add, I like travelling. Travelling to a new place always makes me excited, and it’s an experiential source of what I draw. Also, I can meet and talk with various people through my trips and learn directly about the culture of the country that I am exploring. I can learn and feel new things throughout my travels, and I can draw new moments and scenarios, using colours that I don’t often use.

In the future, I want to travel to more places and paint various cities, people and lives. Through this I want to convey the happiness of each day to more and more people all around the world. Ultimately, I want to become an artist with a well-established, involved and broad worldwide influence. I want to share happiness and positivity through my art, holding faith that my creations will be used well wherever my abilities and inspiration is needed.
