#001 – South Wales artist explores starry vision

Hello! My name is Tacha and I’m a freelance artist and designer from South Wales. I’ve always been fascinated by the night sky since I was a little girl. My father has a telescope and we often go outside on dark, clear nights to spot stars and planets; I’m always in awe of what we see through the lens. I like to try and capture the wonder, mystery and magic of the sky through my illustrations.

Like many illustrators, I fell in love with art and painting when I was very young. I knew that I wanted a job in the creative industry, but I wasn’t sure of what. I studied an Art Foundation course in Cardiff which led me to explore different mediums and techniques through fine art, fashion, sculpture and graphic design. I almost fell into the world of Fine Art until I made a super last minute decision to apply for a Graphic Communication course at the University of South Wales.

I fell in love with design and illustration, realising that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I made life-long friends and had was given amazing opportunities. Learning how to communicate through imagery during my studies inspired me to open up my own online shop. Whilst this was very scary at first, it definitely helped with some extra cash throughout university!

Once I graduated, I was lucky enough to secure a full time job as an in-house Designer for a medium sized company. Whilst the work was fairly simple, I felt like my creativity was dwindling, doing the same job every day. After almost 2 years there, it was my time to leave. I built up my online shop and decided to take the leap and go full time freelance. It was definitely the best decision I’ve ever made and I’ll never look back.

Since becoming a full-time freelancer, things have grown so fast. I’ve dabbled in a few things, from stationery, wedding invitations, logo designs and more. But my main love will always be illustration. I love creating dreamy landscapes, sprinkled with stardust and glowing shapes. I’m hugely inspired by Walt Disney, and so always try to add a magical feeling to my illustrations. I paint and draw for myself first and have to think ‘would I buy that?’, and if the answer is ‘no’, then I just can’t do it.

I love creating dreamy landscapes, sprinkled with stardust and glowing shapes.

In the future, I want to focus on expanding my brand and to just keep on creating. I’d love to sprinkle magical dreaminess everywhere. My favourite designers at the moment are Emily Coxhead (creator of The Happy Newspaper), Joanne Hawker and Veronica Dearly. Their brands are so strong and each one of them promotes something close to their heart, such as happiness and mental wellbeing. If I can be anything like these amazing women in the future then I know that I’m on the right path.
